Abstract

Background: Rugoscopy, also called rugo-stereography, is the expert process that studies the characteristics, shape, size, position and direction of the rugae of the palate, in living and dead individuals. It is used as a Criminalistic Dental identification method based on studies, records and classifications of roughness.
Objective: To analyze the individualizing characteristics of palatal rugae in dental laboratories of Guayaquil, Ecuador.
Methods: This was a cross-sectional study in which a sample of 80 models that met inclusion and exclusion criteria was obtained. The shape of the palate, and the shape, length, direction and position of the palatal rugae were recorded using recording sheets.
Results: From the sample of 80 study models, 888 palatal rugae were obtained. The arch shape oval (93.75%), triangular (6.25%) and square (0.0%) were analyzed. The shape pattern of palatal rugae was: straight A (29.05%), curved B (23.54%), sinuous E (18.24%) and point F (12.73%). Regarding the size of the palatine rugae in relation to the shape of the arch, it was: oval with a main length > 5 mm (65.99%), oval with accessory length 3-4 mm (16.33%) and oval with fragmentary length < 3 mm (11.15%). Regarding the direction of the palatine rugae, it was: divergent (65%) and unified (35%). Position of palatal rugae in relation to the arch shape: oval Type I (36.25%), oval Type IV (35%), and oval Type II (20%).
Conclusions: The evaluation and analysis of the palatal rugae is a reliable means of human identification and individualization.
