Anthropometric profile and body composition in Ecuadorian elite soccer players according to their playing position

Abstract

Background: Kinanthropometry is essential for the quantitative assessment of the body composition (BC) and nutritional status of athletes.
Objective: To describe the anthropometric characteristics, the BC and the specific somatotype of professional soccer players.
Method: Anthropometric variables were analyzed in male professional soccer players from a first division team of the Ecuadorian soccer league, evaluating the somatotype, BC, fat mass (FM) and fat free mass (FFM) according to playing position.
Results: Mean height, weight, age and body mass index (BMI) of all players was 179 ± 5.1 cm, 78 ± 7.1 kg, 25.0 ± 5 years and 24.9 ± 2.2 Kg/m2, respectively; with the midfielders being older and the goalkeepers and forwards being taller. The average body fat percentage (BF%) was 13.1 ± 3.3%, with this value being higher in goalkeepers and lower in defensemen. Mean FFM (%) was 45.2 ±1.7%, FM 9.8 ± 2.9 Kg and FFM 66 ± 5.8 Kg. The somatotype of the soccer players (n=30) was endomorphic (1.8 ± 0.5), mesomorphic (5.4 ± 0.9) and ectomorphic (1.8 ± 0.8). There were significant differences between goalkeepers compared to defenders and forwards in terms of endomorphic somatotype. However, all players regardless of their playing position presented a meso-balanced somatotype.
Conclusion: According to the playing position soccer players presented a meso-balanced somatotype; with a BC according to what has been published in the literature regarding this sport.
